ANITA SARAWAK - ASIA'S DIVA

Biography

ANITA Sarawak had no real choice. With a famous film actress as her mother and an equally successful film producer, father, show business was in her blood, and from day one, she was destined to become a star.

Whilst she appeared in a number of movies her first love was always music, and she embarked on her singing career at the tender age of fifteen in Singapore, where she formed a number of bands, performing in local clubs, always chaperoned by mum.

Eventually, Anita was discovered by EMI Records and enjoyed a very successful period, recording hit after hit on a solo basis and also in conjunction with many major Asian artists, achieving the enviable status of gold disc recipient on numerous occasions.

Having gained celebrity status in Asia, Anita decided to venture further afield and headed to the United States of America, where she entered into what turned out to be a long term contract with the world famous, Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, which she considered to be her adopted family. In fact, she appeared in a number of rooms at Caesar's with her band American Dream, thrilling hotel visitors and local fans with her electrifying performances, for almost 20 years, which in itself is a record in Las Vegas.

Her constant popularity is largely due to her untiring efforts to stay ahead of the scene, and not stagnating. This she achieves by regularly 'pushing the envelope', and re-inventing herself. She confides that change can be difficult sometimes but she is determined to continue to evolve as a performer, maintaining a careful balance of classic and contemporary songs, thereby appealing to music fans of all ages. Probably the most drastic and painful example of this never ending quest for excellence, was the renewal of all the personnel in her long-term band, American Dream.

She was more than ably assisted in this task by her then, new musical director, Nate Wingfield, whose reputation attracted the very best musicians on the scene and thus gave her performance a harder edge which allowed Anita to wow the audiences even more. But all good things must come to an end, and the decision to leave Caesar's Palace was a very difficult one to make. Whilst she still retains property and business interests in Las Vegas, Anita thought it was time to come back home and give her real fans as much time and effort as she could, as a kind of repayment, for their loyalty and support through the years.

Always in demand, Anita's schedule has never been busier. She has countless offers for private functions, as well as large concerts and is currently studying a number of film scripts. She will star in her husband's telemovie 'Topeng', which is slated for release in January 2006.

Asked what her proudest moments have been to date, in an exceptional career, and one must remember that her accolades have been many, she points to four events; one where she appeared before thousands of adoring fans, and was voted 'The Top Diva', in Asia. Another, was to recently received the top award for services rendered to the entertainment industry, from the Asian Entertainment Establishment (this on live TV), her popular talk show on Astro, where she actually changes people's lives, and last, but by no means least, her recording contract with the most exciting label in the industry, KRU. She has now recorded her second album with this label entitled 'Anita Sarawak, Another Dimension', which will be released in December 2005, and the plan is to take it international. It is a real departure for this multi talented beauty, as it embraces soft, breathy jazz, with a little R&B, to spice things up a touch, and what's more it's all in English. This album is a 'must buy', for all romantics out there, and for fans new and old, it will be a journey of discovery, as they will hear a very different 'Diva', proving that this Malaysian songbird is indeed amongst the world's top female vocalists. In fact, the whole vocal track was recorded in less than five hours, as Anita wanted to achieve that 'live' quality and feel… and guess what? She has over achieved.

This bundle of dynamite cannot be classed as merely a singer, an actress or even a performer. No, she truly is the ultimate entertainer, leaving audiences breathless and clamouring for more. Never one to 'take it easy', Anita has a popular sitcom, is planning a new lifestyle show, and as mentioned previously will be soon shooting her first movie. Apart from her regular live performances Anita is very busy with her charity work, which nowadays seems to take up most of her time, but not so much to prevent her from launching her own range of jewellery, which will be named 'Anita Sarawak, The Cinta Collection'. Save up your hard earned money as this range hits market in January 2006.

Anita is the first to admit that the title 'Diva' does not sit comfortably with her, as she considers herself a normal person off stage, keeping home and relaxing, by cooking for friends, or even simply going fishing. Webster's Dictionary defines word 'Diva' as a 'goddess', and whilst this little lady has her feet planted firmly on the ground, rest assured that this heavenly body will always provide a performance that is out of this world.

Anugerah Penghibur Terbaik Asia Pasifik (Anugerah Lagu Asia Pasifik 1975).

Syabas

A ‘Diva’, referred to by many, but underneath the glitz and glamour lies a person, a human, a woman. Laid Bare is a musical tale illustrating the realities of being one of the region’s leading public figures. Anita Sarawak, for the very first time, is revealing an episode of her life in this musical tale, which narrates the emergence of love in her life. The Malaysian audience will finally understand the devotion this artiste has to her career, masking all her inner feelings and desolation, in order to produce spectacular performances her fans expect.

This year-end soirée begins with an exciting lucky draw conducted by the Master of Ceremony, Channel V’s Joey G. He’ll be giving away accommodation vouchers for The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands Resort, Tanjong Jara Resort, Pangkor Laut Resort, JW Marriott Surabaya, Miri Marriott Resort & Spa, Cebu City Marriott Hotel, JW Marriott Seoul Korea, relaxation vouchers from Spa Village Kuala Lumpur, beautiful hampers from Kanebo, Etec hampers and treatment vouchers from Innomed and Faceworks.

Anita Sarawak will then take centre stage serenading classics of Shirley Bassey, Frank Sinatra and more. Her songs will continue with narrations by renowned thespian and co-writer of “Laid Bare”, Chacko Vadaketh, who’ll be inserting monologues to invoke elements of humour, grief and of course, love.

Following this formal sit-down affair, guests will be invited to the Shook! Stage at Starhill Gallery for a heart pumping countdown party. Modeled after last year’s success, the countdown party at the Shook! Stage will feature an internationally acclaimed DJ spinning retro and funky tunes all night long. Anita will reappear to pump up the crowd with a few celebration numbers then of course, the year-end countdown bidding a spectacular farewell to 2006.

For the elegant dinner, the culinary team has brainstormed a colourful exquisite presentation composed of a complete four course Western meal, which is best described as the ultimate feast to end 2006. The gastronomic adventure begins with the King Fish Carpaccio with Cajun Seasoning Topped with Olive Oil and Shaved Parmesan Cheese. Next comes the Charred Corn Soup with Seafood Dumpling and, refreshing the palate, a zesty Lime Sherbet. The Chicken Ballotine Filled with Mushroom Duxelles on Wild Beans and Potato Puree, Sautéed Seasonal Vegetables scented with Bell Pepper Oil is the highlight of the feast depicting a remarkable dish as an entrée. The banquet ends with a Rare Cheese with Berry Coulis and Sesame Tuiles.

Tickets are priced at RM500++, RM400++ and RM300++ for the first, second and third tier seats respectively. Bookings and enquiries can be made by contacting JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur at 03-2719 8666 / 2715 9000.

This year-end event at Starhill will add colour to Kuala Lumpur’s end of the year celebrations. Providing the utmost quality in service, food and beverage, hospitality and entertainment, Starhill is the epitome of how festivities are celebrated in this vibrant city. All within an entire complex, guests will enjoy an elegant dinner and a dynamic party, a spectacular evening perfect to welcome the New Year.
