Mariah Angela Carey (born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York) is an American popular music singer and composer, who rose to prominence in the 1990s, where she became America's most successful recording artist for that decade, according to Billboard magazine. The World Music Awards recognized her as the world's biggest-selling artist of the 1990s[1], and in 2000, the show declared her the best-selling female pop artist of all time.
Carey's music has been influenced by Rhythm and blues, Pop, Gospel, Hip Hop, dance, Soul and Rock. Her singing and songwriting are structured around her wide-ranging voice, which spans five octaves; she frequently uses melismas, and her vocal swoops and trills and jumps between octaves are easily recognizable features of her sound. She has produced every one of her ten studio albums with the exception of her debut and directed music videos. Since 1999, she has occasionally worked as an actress and supports a variety of charitable organizations.

Carey recorded a G#7 during a live performance of "Emotions" at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, and again on the popular Arsenio Hall Show.
Carey is credited as having a five-octave vocal range; she can cover all the notes from the alto range leading to those of a coloratura soprano [85]. Her vocal trademark is her ability to hit high notes in the whistle register. Carey has often been incorrectly been credited as having a 7 or even 8-octave vocal range. It has been suggested that Carey's publicists falsely claimed this at the start of her career [86], although it may also be a misstatement of the fact that Carey frequently accesses the whistle register, especially the notes situated in the seventh octave. So far her highest note is a G#7 five and a half steps above C7, the highest note on a standard keyboard which she hit in live performances of "Emotions", at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, and at the famous Arsenio Hall show. Her performance trademark is making fluttering motions with her left hand while she sings. Voice teachers have commented that this actually helps one's singing technique.
Carey's voice has come under scrutiny from many critics who believe that she does not effectively communicate the message of her songs. Rob Tannenbaum, a critic who reviewed her 1992 album "Emotions" comments "Carey has a remarkable vocal gift, but to date, unfortunately, her singing has been far more impressive than expressive." [87] Other critics often denounce her high notes, classing them as "dogwhistles" or gimmicks, stating that her singing is so overwrought with melisma, and 'octave hops' that it takes away from the true meaning of the songs.
However, Carey's voice is rated as one of the greatest ever among pop singers [88]. In 2003, she was voted as having the Greatest Voice in music in MTV's and Blender Magazine's countdown of "The 22 Greatest Voices In Music", placing her ahead of such rivals as Whitney Houston (#3), Christina Aguilera (#5) and Céline Dion (#9).
Carey's vocal style has influenced a generation of singers, including Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé Knowles as well as many American Idol competitors.

guys stop comparing mariah and regine. they are two of the most precious voices in the world. they both got talents. regine is a powerhouse while mariah is a sensational diva. she is great way back then even now but not that much anymore..i like her way back 1991-95 she is amazing. but look at regine as time goes by she becomes more powerful.she is more than 20 years in the music industry right now. she continue to amaze her audience. indeed she is great. realy as whitney said "the voice to beat"...
no diva nowadays can surpass regine in terms of vocal abilities and great chest voice.

mariah carey used to be a prime singer in the world! heck, everybody aspires to have her talent. Yes, she won a lot of singing awards and everything. She went through a lot of incantations over the years. unfortunately though, she has degraded into somewhat more of a whistler (for the lack of word). she no longer belts out as she used to. her whistLing has become more of AN ADDICTION THAN BEING A PART OF singing itself. Lately we no longer see the spark , warmth and emotions she used to grace us with in the music industry. yeah R and B may have been the trend lately but Mariah carey is not famed for because of such. She now lipsynchs her songs even at live performances. i cant blame critics 4 questioning her capacity to sing well as what her studio album quality songs give us. where has the MC we know as a great diva been? maybe at the local hip hop junbkie studio doing her whistle register.. I just watched that Regine clip and the only reason I am bringing her up is because all of the comments about her... I don't get the hype? I wasn't moved by her voice at all, and a true testament to a singers power is their ability to affect a listener even if they sing in a different language.
Mariah Carey is a legend in the making okay.. Her vocal influence is written all over days young divas. When she sings in the chest and full voice she will wipe the floor with the young hussies out here today (please see Vision of Love, Vanishing, One Sweet Day etc). On top of her power in full/chest voice is that amazing whistle note. Mariah doesn't just hit the whistle note and carry it she can actually zoom in and out of the note and sing in it. Her natural singing voice which she uses a lot more now is much more deeper and is pleasant as well. She has uncanny range and her voice may not be what it used to but give the woman some credit!! 20 years in the business, 11 albums and 17 #1 singles.
They wrote her off, but true talent always wins out!!!
She has been very innovative in the game, moving from adult contemporary ballads to hip-hop, to R&B, gospel etc.

mariah carey and regine velasquez i must say a true jewels and they are gift with god with good voices, they both good on their own field. mariah is a full dramatic coloratura and can hit the highest note using whistle register(G#7emotion) the quality of voice is husky and thin while regine is a full lyric coloratura with a quality of solid fine vocal timbre and can hit the highest note using chest voice alone (B5 reason, and B6 during an interviewed and test vocalization on singapore. the main point on this is we must not compare each other because the two and the other singers on the whole wide world is up to different style genre and techniques, appreciate them or not is not their problem, its on the audience part. | |

I love regine's singing. I love mariah's singing especially her use of falsetto. You cannot compare two great singers to each other that don't have that much in common. Regine sings full of her chest and head voice because she chooses. She might be able to hit notes like Mariah, but she chooses not to. mariah sings full head, chest, and whistle. It's just her and you can't compare them two if they sing completely differently. That's like mariah carey and Patty LaBelle. They both sing full Mariah whistle and head, patty full head and chest it's just too complicated to try and compare them. They're all good singers in their own way. now I know ya'll can agree on that. | |

mariah vs. regine always gets out of hand. i mean i don't think they should be even compared at the expense of having the other demeanored. they are both great artists. Regine is a great vocalist and a stunning live vocal performer- she also is a talented actress and multimedia artist- endorsements, recognitions, and multiplatinum cds to her credit. On the other hand, Mariah is an international commercial and critical powerhouse. Over the years, her voice has changed, but so has her artisty and outtake on music: more than a singer, she has becme a musician, an artist with her instrument her 5 octave voice. She has accolades and legions of followers to her name, as Regine has in the Philippines. They both have wonderful voices. With Regine singing Mariah's songs, it is a form of tribute, not competition. As artists and vocalist, I don't think they compare. Mariah said in an inerview (from way-back) she doesn't enjoy vocal belting. Regine also has not exhibited reaching extrememly low or high notes. But does that make them poor artists? I think we go a little bit out of hand. Instead of appreciating two God given talents, we pit them lowly just to make points that not even time can resolve. The world loves her very much, that's why she has many number 1 singles, it is all because people love her voice,performance and herself of course. Mariah can play with her voice both in low and high notes, i dont think people can do it the same way as mariah, listen to "YOU'RE SO COLD", her voice is climbing from low to high, some says that she is oversinging, but if you have the same ability as he, i bet you will do it too, ok? listen also to IF IT'S OVER!!! blasting soully,power,emotion, and techniques, PAULA ABDUL on AMERICAN IDOL said no one can sing louder than mariah, I LOVE MARIAH. mariah carey used to be a prime singer in the world! heck, everybody aspires to have her talent. Yes, she won a lot of singing awards and everything. She went through a lot of incantations over the years. unfortunately though, she has degraded into somewhat more of a whistler (for the lack of word). she no longer belts out as she used to. her whistLing has become more of AN ADDICTION THAN BEING A PART OF singing itself. Lately we no longer see the spark , warmth and emotions she used to grace us with in the music industry. yeah R and B may have been the trend lately but Mariah carey is not famed for because of such. She now lipsynchs her songs even at live performances. i cant blame critics 4 questioning her capacity to sing well as what her studio album quality songs give us. where has the MC we know as a great diva been? maybe at the local hip hop junbkie studio doing her whistle register.. NO PUN INTENDED, IM JUST BEING OBJECTIVE! I HEARD REGINE VELASQUEZ from the Philippines, wow as in wow, she belts like no other in full chest voice IN A SERIES OF VOCAL ACROBATICS. you know what!!i love regine and i also admire mariah!! For me regine is better than mariah!!regine sings live with her powerful voice..hitting high notes..she sings on a different position..mariah, honestly, also sings live but when it comes on her high notes, sometimes she making it a whistle register or she making it low. try to watch her live performance of "cant take that away"..she sounds that she is sick!! when i heard and watched that performance i was disappointed!!

i am the no.1 fan of ms. carey, before.
but ms. regine velasquas is far better than mariah. I gave my conclusion when I saw her concert when i visited the philippines.
She removed her sandals when she sang her 6 - minute finale of high-note songs. And her rumored boyfriend Mr. Robin Padila gave her some flowers at the end of the concert.
She also sang high notes in a sitting position, and i was so amazed.
and i saw at CNN news that Whitney Houston said that regine velasquez is the greatest.

regine can do a whistle register live, and better although not higher than mariah's.
and she always give her high notes at her concerts when people cheers her, and take note, she gives her high notes while sitting on a chair, sitting on the floor, lying on a bed, lying on a couch, or in a lotus position.
she sang effortless in singing on the wings of love, i dont wanna miss a thing, i have nothing, never too far, butterfly, and other high-noted songs in full voice and with her added voice acrobats.
i love mariah before but i think she is blinded by fame. And regine is not.

mariah carey lipsynchs and regine doesn't, especially when reaching the highest notes. Mariah reaches the high notes just becuase of her whistle register, but regine reaches her high notes in full voice. And Regine sang for 9 mins and 30 secs in her concert "Reigning still" for her finale of the medley I Believe (Fantacia Barinno), I Belive I can fly and My Miracle, and she sang straight and she sang all the high notes perfectly and straight. She has long belting power and she was crying when she was singing that. Regine sings from her heart, that's why she is really effortless, and Mariah sings with her big mouth that's why she sings ugly. She can't even reach her high notes just like before and I am not saying this because I am a Filipino but I am saying this as a singer. And I like them both, but I love Regine better, and majority of the world's population does. She is also a great actress that she won as best actress becuase of the episode "Lobo" in the ABS-CBN's Maalaala Mo Kaya. She is also a great comedienne, and her feet keeps on the ground. She is a very poor little girl from the state of Bulacan in the Philippines and I cried when I saw her video when she sang the Greatest Love of All on her concert when she was still on her starting years on the showbusiness, because all the people gave her a standing ovation.
Mariah Carey is an icon of music and also an icon of supremacy but is it rightful to an international icon to show a f-cking sign on her pictures? I bet it is not. Regine is linked to many guys beucase they want her to get down becuase she is now on the 1-step-closer-to-highest fame. Got it? Just analyze it.
mariah Carey is palstic, while Regine is very down-to-earth. Regine inspite of her fame, doesn't forget to go to her town every year just to visit and show up and entertain her townmates for free.
And if Mariah is a great actress, why is it that I know no awards entitled to her? Hey Mariah fans, I am not a Mariah-hater but I just want to prove that Regine is far better that Carey. It is like comparing a rose and a jasmin. Of course, regine is the rose.
Regine already sang at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. And she was given the offer to play in Broadway musicals but she disagreed becuase of her lack of experience in muical theatre. See? She is very down-to-earth, not like the rugged carey. Got me? In a singing contest, the contest is not agame of how high a contestant would pull its voice, but it is how the ocntestant sang the song.

I LOVE Mariah Carey i think overal she is within top 3 greatest singers of all time with Whitney Houston and Patti Label have u seen patti on divas live she made jessica simpson look like a loser and jessicas voice id really powerful. Mariah Carey wrote her own sons, produced her own songs and sang all her own songs wid her amazing vocals. And by the way she has a 5.5 octave range i read it somewhere that she has a bit higher than a 5 octave range maybe even 5.3 octave range or sumtin like that anyway she puts emotions in her songs and connects with people and and on top of that she has an enormous range and can belt out a song so with all that said i don't think many singers can match mariah not to say that it can't be done but it's rare

I think during their prime years if these two divas could be at the same time, whitney will outdo mariah when it comes to vocal quality, as we all know, no need to deny, whitney's voice is powerful, soulful and beautiful which is comparable to aretha franklin and patti labelle while mariah's is very airy although she has the highest range so far among the singers her voice is somewhat comparable to minnier ripperton but minnies voice is soft and angelic. As with liveconcerts, mariah always do lipsynch when the song is in high notes, though whitney right now never has the voice quality before, she still sings what she can during her concerts and not doing lipsynch. And I observed, mariah is not good when it comes to a duet with known diva's as you can observed in divas live, celine can easily outsing mariah, and whitney does it do in when you believe duet, i don't know if mariah wants to give way to these divas, i don't know if she is afraid, that is only my opinion, mariah is good doing solos. Regine's voice truly soars in every concert, she never fails to show her vocal abilty, never lose it's prowess, also with regards to celine. | |

all i know is that, regine is far better than mariah, i mean i have nothing against mariah, i like her so much i admire her angelic-five-octave-vocal range but she cant always sing live as regine can. mariah can sing live but when it comes to the highest part of the song, she lipsynchs. but regine? all in my whole damn life ive seen her, she never lipsynchs. regine is not as good as mariah when it comes to that octave thing, but regine can do it aswell. when mariah cant reach a high note, she uses her octave to compensate that lost although its good sometimes but it doesnt mean she sings it more good that it is supposed to be sung in the original. when mariah sings at her chest, she sounds like she is sick and having a soarthroat and her voice sounds like its crack, but when regine sings at her chest or head, she sounds better than anybody else. and that is a fact!!! | |

If you want to be fair, compare Mariah in her prime to any singer in their prime. There was never a singer as great or greater than Mariah had been-- or is, for that matter; cmon, she has nodules in her vocal cords, but she's still great. And after the Glitter fiasco, after having been paid off to terminate the contract with Virgin, she managed to rise back to the top, scoring on the way three Grammys and God knows how many other awards out there! Her gifts deserve tremendous respect. And she is thankful everyday for them. Mariah-- you rock! :D | |

its d6, on reasons, search it on you tube and u'll see! She hit d6 in fullvoice when she pulled the word "why". At the end of the note, she hit a b5 on headvoice but it sounded d6 thou! If you want compare it to mariah's c6(loverboy) when she pulled the words "I enjoy", and regines reasons when she pulled "why", you'll see the difference that regine is one note higher. | |

mariah still is the best singer alive... no one can be compared to her vocally, her voice is almost perfect.. even without the whistles and beltings.. her voice in the normal range is good enough for her to hail as a good singer.. you know that its not just the range that is being judged if who is the better one... its the way the singer delivers the song, with soul and emotion... and i think when it comes to those... mariah is the no.1
it doesnt mean that if she cant reach high notes in chest voice like regine.. it means that regine is the better one... remember, regine's highest note in chest voice is a b5 while mariah is a g#5.. that is only 1 note and a semitone higher compared to mariah's...
i know mariah cant sing like she used to sing before.. but listen to her voice when it was in its prime... her voice was almost perfect... its very hard to find a single mistake in the way she sings.. she may not blow like whitney and regine but when it comes to total quality of the voice... the impact,soul,emotion,range and power... mariah is the winner.. | |

first and foremost, dont compare Mariah to Regine. they are good singers and performers but Mariah is better than Regine. and about MC's whistle registers, that's her own style of singing, that's her trademark, that's is why she became incredible, and she doesnt use those whistle registers to reach high notes... it's the way how she delivers her song. Please stop comparing Mariah with Regine Velasquez. The latter is a good singer, but she is not in the same category Mariah is. Mariah has better range, control, and most important thing her voice sound so beatifull so melodic always. Besides, Regine is always singing Mariahīs songs in her concerts with shows how much she admires her. Her renditions pales in comparisson with Mariah by the way.
As for the Whitney-Mariah thing, When you Believe clearly shows the difference between the two, Whitney has the most powerfull and loudest voice and if you think these are the best qualities for a singer, Sheīs with out any doubt the best singer in the world. Mariah has the highest vocal register, she can hit both higher and lower notes than Whitney, and she has the ability to alternate notes from different octaves and even her 3 ways of singing (belting, whispering and whistle) with ease, while Whitney is always belting and singing the same way. well as said...u have 2 prove urself worthy by letting it out without restraints....MC holds back..Y? is she afraid not able to hit a high chest voice? and 2 redeem herself will eventually shift 2 whistle register? geez...that sucks!!! where has the music i used to love from her like"forever"went? no more.just hums...and barely auduble haahhhhssss and iiiihss................plus plenty of hip hop nuances...she certainly degraded over time.. come to thnk of it, can she still hit high chest or even head voice? nahh... i certainly doubt it. ive heard her a lotta times liveee..geezzz its awful..she just makes me feel unimpressed. regine is much better than MC in many ways...though MC is good (even better than she is B4) she still has 2 prove herself over time. regine likes MC but she chose to have her own taste and personality to her singing..she doesnt inappropriately do whistle register as what MC fondly does to complememnt her songs. come to thnk of it, MC sure did suck and stands pale in comparison to Whitney huston in their duet when u believe...sure she did hit a high note... in the end with a whistle rewgister ( as expected)...whew talking about stereotype.. well an endless discussion for an overrated diva-MC. | |

mariah carey used to be a prime singer in the world! heck, everybody aspires to have her talent. Yes, she won a lot of singing awards and everything. She went through a lot of incantations over the years. unfortunately though, she has degraded into somewhat more of a whistler (for the lack of word). she no longer belts out as she used to. her whistLing has become more of AN ADDICTION THAN BEING A PART OF singing itself. Lately we no longer see the spark , warmth and emotions she used to grace us with in the music industry. yeah R and B may have been the trend lately but Mariah carey is not famed for because of such. She now lipsynchs her songs even at live performances. i cant blame critics 4 questioning her capacity to sing well as what her studio album quality songs give us. where has the MC we know as a great diva been? maybe at the local hip hop junbkie studio doing her whistle register.. NO PUN INTENDED, IM JUST BEING OBJECTIVE! I HEARD REGINE VELASQUEZ from the Philippines, wow as in wow, she belts like no other in full chest voice IN A SERIES OF VOCAL ACROBATICS. Mariah Carey is the best among the best.... the brightest among the brightest...though she's getting old and sometimes can't sing live, she still have the chemistry to the audience, a very remarkable delivery of her song and a very angelic voice. there are many excellent singers, but she's still remarkable, say even among the remarkable of the remarkables.
she did overwork herself, and that strained her voice, but look what just a little bit of rest did to it. more notable, how many singers could have carried on when they werent in such good shape the way Carey did? she has the type of talent that you have to keep loving, even when she's tired. And now her voice is brilliant, and she's up for 8 Grammys; after all the negative publicity of 2001, if that isn't something, i don't know what is anymore. | |
