JACLYN VICTOR - MALAYSIAN IDOL WINNER
Jaclyn a/p Joshua Thanaraj Victor (b. December 4, 1978) was the winner of the first season of Malaysian Idol, and has since become a successful singer.
Victor, popularly known as Jac, is the first to gain the title of Malaysian Idol, a singing competition that was spawned from the "Idol" series that started off as Pop Idol in the U.K..
Victor overcame many obstacles in life before achieving fame. Her dad had passed away when she was just nine years old, and her mother, Maggie Victor, had to take three jobs simultaneously in order to support her four children. At eighteen, Jaclyn started singing in clubs and hotel lounges in order to help support the family.
In 2004, along with ten thousand others, Jac auditioned for Malaysian Idol. Impressed by her strong voice and personality, the panel of judges put her through to the next round. Upon landing a final thirty-third spot, Jac perfomed live, earning praise from the judges for her performance of "Superwoman", which was also received very well by Malaysians as she accumulated the most votes that evening, becoming the seventh person to reach the top twelve.
In the first spectacular, the theme for the week was "Song from your Pop Idol". Jac chose a song in her own language, "Keliru". Her performance took her through to the next round.
The second theme was "Song from your Classic Idol". Jac's choice was "When I Fall in Love".
After another double elimination, Jac was back next week performing a "Song from the 80s", Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You". She went on to the "Rock Show" with a performance of "Sweet Child o' Mine"
The last six contestants included Nikki, Dina, Andrew, and Saipul. Jac performed an effortless "Lady Marmalade". On the results show, she found herself in the bottom two for the first time (with Nikki, who performed "Emotion"), but she survived the elimination.
After reaching the last three, her chances only improved after her performance of Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You". During the finale, Jac sang "Gemilang", a piece composed by Aubrey Suwito. Her interpretation of the newly written song prompted Kak Jee to declare that a star was born.
Jac finally won the competition, earning 76% of the audience vote in the final contest against Dina Nadzir. As the newly-crowned Malaysian Idol, she performed "Gemilang" again.
Jac's single, "Gemilang", set a new Malaysian record. Her album achieved gold status within weeks of going on sale. Her previously-released album Dream, sold out within days, despite the sudden 390% increase in price. She won the "Best Newcomer Award" on Hitz.FM and "Best New Artist" in Anugerah Bintang Popular.
Since winning, Victor has appeared in numerous television and talk shows such as Pillow Talk and Muzik-Muzik. She has also performed "Gemilang" at a Tsunami Concert held to aid victims of the recent Asian tsunami disaster. She has performed in duets with Hazami, Taufik Batisah, and Akedemi Fantasia's second winner, Zahid.
Victor emerged as the champion during the Asian Music Festival in Shanghai with her winning song, "Gemilang" ergo, placing her in row with previous local winners like Siti Nurhaliza (1999) , Deja Moss (2001) and Misha Omar (2003).
On 21 January 2006, Victor walked away with RTM Hits 1's Best Song and Best Performance awards for Gemilang. Later, on 5 February the same year, the song earned her and its composer Aubrey Suwito and lyricist Azmin Mudin the coveted Juara Lagu (Champion of Songs) and Best Ballad Song awards in TV3's 20th edition of the Anugerah Juara Lagu, an annual song festival which honours each year's best-crafted songs.
On April 29, 2006, Victor won four of seven nominations from the Malaysian music scene's biggest night, the 13th Anugerah Industri Muzik. They are Best New Artist, Best Musical Arrangement in a Song, Best Pop Album and Best Album.
Inilah Jac
Launched in 25 August 2006 after a series of delays, the second album, titled Inilah Jac (translated as "Now this is Jac", in an emphasising tone), promises to show her fans and those unfamiliar with her, her true capability in music. Music mogul Ahmad Izham Omar commended her new effort by saying, "At first, she was a singer; now she's a vocalist."
Around the time the album was launched, not only her single Cepat-Cepat is receiving rave airplay, she was on a trip in Australia for both leisure and business purposes, including visiting the famous Mount Buller, and performing in two concerts in Adelaide's Australia for Christ Fellowship Church (alongside Malaysian singer-songwriter, Juwita Suwito), and in Melbourne's Paradise Community Church (which inaugural Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian is a member of; though Sebastian himself did not appear). While in Australia, Victor also received an interview from gospel radio station HCJB

In an international singer, Mariah Carey would be the one holds the highest vocal range... While in Asia would be Regine Velasquez holds the highest note.. Im a chinese and I live in Hongkong for a long time. Coco lee is right when she said that Regine is "Diva of all Divas", and it is true. Why? When i went to the Philippines a year ago, 4 days before mariah carey's concert, I was shocked when I saw Regine Velasquez sings the Bringin' on the heartbreak, where she able to hit the highest range in jus a normal, calm, and very belting vocal range. And that was shocked. While Mariah Carey sing it with all her full voice in a whistle range just to hit that very high note. In which regine just made it in a normal voice. IT’S BEEN some 20 years since Regine Velasquez launched her professional performing career. As a pretty newcomer and singing champion, she impressed audiences with her powerful voice and high notes.
At first, however, her image as a performer was a bit of a blur. Her mentors dressed her in outfits designed to make her look sophisticated and classy, but their “padded shoulder” look also made her resemble a female football linebacker.
Despite the visual kinks, Regine’s singing career rose steadily, and she soon tried her hand at something new for her -- movie acting. Alas, she did less well at her new sideline, because she didn’t photograph all that beautifully.
There was nothing wrong with her looks, the problem appeared to be with her eyes, which appeared to look a bit banlag (wall-eyed) on the silver screen.
So, after appearing in some teen flicks, Regine put her movie career on hold, and concentrated on singing and recording. With her wide range and powerful high register, she was a clear winner.
In time, however, Regine was criticized for her relentlessly birit (belting) style of singing. It was impressive, but also predictable, trying-hard and artistically limiting.
Her defenders argued that Regine was simply giving her audience what it wanted -- vocal pyrotechnics. It’s true: Pinoy listeners do delight in being blown away by a singer’s powerful high notes, and if their eardrums aren’t given an aural rinsing in this wise, they’re disappointed.
Unfortunately, there’s little that’s artistic about constant belting, so Regine’s growth as a performing artist suffered. Only much later did she heed cautionary comments about her performance, and opt for greater variety and subtlety in her singing.
She also re-launched her acting career -- and, this time, she was much more successful. Now that she was older, perfect looks were no longer absolutely required, so Regine clicked by playing kooky characters in a series of dizzy and ditzy romantic comedies.
Here again, however, she was criticized for being too kneejerk-kooky, so the effect of her performance was strained and -- that word again -- trying-hard.
Despite the brickbats, however, there’s no denying that, two decades after she launched her professional career, Regine is at the top of her game. She has many concerts, hit albums, performance tours abroad, TV shows, movies -- why, she’s a veritable one-woman entertainment conglomerate!
Now that she’s marking a major landmark, however, Regine could reevaluate her career thus far, and opt to plan it better, to meet the exigencies and realities of the next 10 or 20 years.
For starters, she could worry about her look as a performer and TV host these days, which she’s been trying to jazz and sex up with revealing outfits. Yes, if you’ve been around for a while, you’ve got to keep surprising your public -- but, the operative word is surprising, not shocking your audience.
Regine also needs to face up to rumors about her controversial love life. Whether the rumors are true or not, they tend to confound the younger members of her audience, so some clarification -- as in clearing away the debris -- is decidedly in order.
In terms of artistry, Regine could try much harder to use her popularity, not just to give her fans what they want, but also to open up new musical horizons for them, and to develop herself more determinedly as a performing artist.
She should also look for newer musical fields to conquer abroad -- not the usual Fil-Am audience, but a truly international one. That’ll take a lot of doing, but with her talent and experience, she could pull it off.
Finally, in the movies, Regine should play more age-appropriate roles, and do away with the artificially daft and ditzy acting shticks that some of her injudicious directors have foisted on her.
If she finally presents herself onscreen as her own person, Regine’s fans could love her all the more for it!

I don't like Siti singing bcoz her song have no feeling & she still smiles even singing sad song. Her voice is good but lack soul. Idon't know...less 'human' sorry to say. Jac sings until herself cry. I think that shows something. About Regine, I don't know her well but I just watch her video & I think she have good voice but it didn't pull me as much as Jac's. People, get a life! Stop dissing Jac and Regine like your life depended on it! They're both Christians, and if you ask me, I don't think they'd like what's written here in the comments section of this page. Anyway, being a good singer is not only about having good vocal prowess and a pretty face. There's the hit singles, and personality, and variety of genres sung.
Regine is loved in the Phillipines (and other parts of the world) for her vocal prowess, good looks, hit singles, and personality. And that's thanks to a combination of good marketing strategy, exposure, and time.
Jac, on the other hand, is loved in Malaysia (and expanding to other parts of the world) for her vocal prowess, hit singles, personality, and ability to sing various genres of music (she does everything from country to rock, for God's sake). Given time (and a good marketing plan to introduce her to the world), I am sure she'd be as famous as Regine.

Regine is still better i think. All i need is proof. And i don't think she can hit a note below c2. That's too bass for a female singer who can hit 5th to 6th octave. Maybe if she is a pure alto. Regine has four octaves coz she can now hit a2. And by the way, you don't need to crumble your face while hitting f6 coz that's not belting anymore, that's a whistle. Proof that she can hit f6 coz regine has. Her song "more than words can say" is the proof. And let's don't judge a singer on her future that she will be better. Vocal capability is changing while your aging. You have to maintain it properly and don't strained it. Regine on the other hand managed to do so, and she's still can reach those notes and can do higher even the whistle register in her age 36 We can't say if jac will be better than her unless she's in 36. U cant compare Jac n Regine... They're different... Jac is still 27(28 this december) but Regine is already almost 36! Age does matter... A singer is at his/her peak at around 35-40 ... U can ask vocal experts bout it ( "Vocal Coach" said )
By the time Jac reaches 36 , I bet she'll be far better than Regine ... Even know she's already almost as gud as Regine... Maybe better!!!
The Gemilang she sang at AJL20 is not her best performance... Her 3rd or 4th best performance I think.... But the "Gemilang" she sang after the result announced was really mind-blowing... She hits C6 at the end using chest-voice alone!!!!! Great vocal belting!!!! | |

To Anne: Jac has higher vocal range approx. 4 octave ... She can sing as low as C2 note n as high as E6/G6/F6 (not sure bout her highest , coz even singing F6 notes her face didnt crumble at all!)

And Jac and Regine do have similar vocal range. The last note in "Gemilang" is the exact same note in "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" WHICH Jac holds out in her studio.

jac is great. amazing, the first time i've heard someone sang the way she does.
to filipino frens, i think regine is great too. i listened to her sang i believe, like jac, she belted the high notes effortlessly. and to be fair, altho i'm malaysian, i would say she's better than siti.
p/s- i dont usuallly like diva-like voices. i i prefer sheila maajid and anggun. jaclyn is an exception bcos she's too good to be true | |

Jac is much much better than Regine The Screamer. Jac does not scream. When she sings at high notes, the melody is still beautiful. This website has failed to find the best voice in Asia using people's vote because it simply does not work due to geographic and cultural differences! | |
